Update of the protection database is successful but the program still reports that the database is out of date even though the lastest version has been downloaded and installed.

The windows security centre also displays a warning that your antivirus software is out of date.

Specific Configuration:

Samsung X05 running Windows Xp Professional with Service Pack 3.

Problem Diagnosis:

The system date in windows was inadvertently set to a future date which made both Kaspersky and the windows security centre report that the database was obsolete.

Changing the system date to the correct date solves this problem.

Windows Update fails to install one or more individual updates. The update downloads successfully but fails to install and reports an error code 8020000E.

Specific Configuration:

Compaq SG3002UK running Windows Vista Home Basic with Service Pack 1.

Problem Diagnosis:

The error code 0×8020000E is “BG_E_VOLUME_CHANGED”

“The destination volume has changed. If the disk is removable, it might have been replaced with a different disk. Re-insert the original disk and resume the job.”

In this case the original system disk had been imaged to a new disk and the system was running off the new disk.

This problem seems to be related to the location of the SoftwareDistribution folder which is in %systemroot% (normally c:\windows).

Renaming this folder causes the windows update service to recreate it which solves the problem.

Note that you will lose your windows update history but this is purely for information.

To rename the SoftwareDistribution folder:

stop the windows update service

rename the SoftwareDistribution folder

start the windows update service
